Calling All Doctors
Megan Lindow’s article about Cell-Life and all it’s doing in Africa to save AIDS victim’s lives is amazing… I might be a true American and be completely oblivious about global events and such, but I had no idea that the experimental program even existed. Does anyone know how the program is funded? Are neighboring countries funding it, or are the cell phones being issued on a complimentary basis for the Cell-Life staff by the cell phone companies themselves? Lindow mentioned possible future funding opportunities, but didn’t spell out exactly how it is currently supported…
In such an extreme environment are the doctors and nurses never victims of roaming or no-signal dilemmas that I seem to fall victim to at least two or three times a day ( I can’t even go into the MPA building without losing all reception). I mean really, can you imagine if a nurse wasn’t able to get through to a doctor because she couldn’t get a signal! Who would be liable? What if the central system that stores all the data crashes?!
