I enjoyed Sylvester Brown’s article, “Conyers Looks for News in the Wrong Place,” he pointed out a great point that American’s just aren’t all that interested in what goes on in Washington. It really is pathetic that we don’t have the attention span to follow world news or events and while it is reality, I think it saddens most people (especially GSPM’ers). Brown is accurate in stating the mainstream media is no longer interested in actual news because Americans would much rather see the next big sex tape (as long as China Doll is no where near it) instead of informative reporting on current global events. News is no longer news, it is entertainment and they are in it for the ratings…not a new concept, just an ever growing trend.

So do you think the internet is a catalyst for this trend? Or simply a new media forum for the shift to expand??

In answer to your questions, I think that the internet only serves to put more entertainment news at our fingertips. From buddy icons that put the OC, and the Simple Life in our faces, to more spaces for advertisements, the web only seems to serve to promote the MSM conglomerates.

By the way, I also think the messenger is a part of the problem as Brown seems to insinuate. Conyers cries wolf so much that he rarely gets media air-time now.

Since there are so few Americans interested in politics, I think the Internet is a great catalyst for increasing political discussion by bringing together people those interested in government and policy despite disparate geographies.

Kelly K- I think your right! There is no better forum for even the most of obscure interests than the internet, including us political junkies – thanks for your comment!

Having just got back from Europe, you realise how much America's news is so inward focused and too often more interested in entertainment than news.

On any one day, the BBC will discuss many signicant events around the world, which although not directly affecting people in the UK, are considered to be important newsworthy events.

The BBC has its problems, but the fact that is a public service broadcaster and not reliant on advertising revenue certainly seems to make for a more informative news service.

Peter- my world traveling amor!! You are so right about the BBC!

When ever I go on a road trip to NC I always listen to it... Seriously you'd think they were talking about a parallel universe! BBC talks about really interesting stuff going on in the world that isn't even on the radar for US newscasts. Sometimes they'll be talking about a story and it will show up two weeks later in our local paper!
