Star Wars-Eerie pretrial of Democracy's Death
Last night I finally did what most of what everyone had done two weeks ago already. I finally saw Star Wars-Episode III. I actually found that I liked this one the best of all, but in watching this film it was eerie how much politics and democracy played into the plot of this movie. Grant it this film takes place in outer space in a different time, but the problems and questions they face and raise are all to similar and familiar. The line that struck me the most is when The Sith overlord declared an empire since it was needed in time of war. The alienation of rights and representation in a body of government due to the fear of an intergalactic war and this was the method to keep them safe. As this is going on Natalie Portman says-"This is how democracy dies...With thunderous applause." How her statement would be a tragic foreshadowing to what would happen. The War on Terrorism is doing the same to this nation and to it's citizens. The Internet is now being used as a tool by government to monitor an individual's interest on what blogs they peruse through or websites that support or go against the government's favored ideology. The concept of data mining where correlations are built by patterns not immediately apparent. In the name of safety we are slowly killing Democracy and givng up our hard won rights.
