Choice is Important

As an educated adult and active user of the Internet, I like to think that I'm capable of distinguishing fact from fiction on the Web. In Cass R. Sunstein's article from the Daily We entitled "Is the Internet really a blessing for democracy?", the answer to the question is YES!

Just as I have favorite sections to the Sunday newspaper, I have favorite sites on the web, many of which are similar to my personal and political beliefs. Does this make me unintelligent because I gravitate to sites that specialize in the topics I find interesting? I certainly hope not. In fact, using the internet to determine what position the opposition is taking is critical for obtaining information quickly and efficiently and using it to advantage. It's my responsibility to search, filter, question and research information that I obtain.

Having a choice of what to read, where to browse and what information to share with family and friends is important. Regulating or restricting the Web is bad for democracy as it limits the personal freedoms that are an important part of our country's identity.
