SMS to the Rescue!
I just read the article (How SMS Could Help Save Your Life) by Megan Lindow about how text messaging saved an HIV/AIDS patient in Cape Town. Therapeutic counselor, Flora Thobela was visiting a patient who felt sick and was nauseous. Realizing something wasn't right, Thobela quickly text messaged an alert to the clinic and after review, it was determined that the patient was having a reaction to specific medications, which could have been fatal. Using a cell-life program, the doctor was able to save this patient's life immediately. The ability for text messaging to be used in this manner is quite remarkable (I'm just now entering the 21st century) and knowing it's available in times of crisis makes me feel a lot better about receiving prompt attention. It sheds a whole new light on 9-1-1 emergencies.
