Privacy policy

I just finish reading Chapter 11 and I found a very interesting point: adopt a privacy policy. I have read before in other books on fundraising the importance of having a privacy policy for donations. I agree that privacy is important, but why for donations?
I believe that it is better for people to know who you donated money to and how much. I think it is a principle of transparency. But as I see it privacy in fundraising is a big issue and I do not quite yet understand why.

Why a privacy policy? The first reason remains ensuring that your donors feel comfortable handing over sensitive information (i.e., credit card or checking account information). If you don't have a clear, understandable privacy policy that ensures the proper handling and use of their private information, your site will turn away possible contributers.

The confusion seems to be over the issue of transparency, which allows for the public to see just who is funding their political candidates.

A successful privacy policy might explain that the campaign needs to report some information (such as names, addresses, employer), while it would never give away or misuse other more private information.

Note: It's lonely down here at the bottom of the alphabet: The Toaster Talks.
