Alienating RRRs

My mom forwarded me an email she received from a Religious Right Relative(RRR).

Usually I turn red and gnash my teeth, but in the end I let cooler heads prevail.

Yeah - today...not so much.

Here are some excerpts from the email my mom sent me:

Herein is one of many reasons why it is believed that media is biased.

Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and tried to light it?

Did you know his trial is over? Did you know he was sentenced? Did you see/hear any of the judge's comments on TV/Radio? Didn't think so. Our liberal press don't care about these things.

Everyone should hear what the judge had to say. Ruling by Judge William Young, US District Court.

"It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom. It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea. It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom. So that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely."

So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV sets? We need more judges like Judge Young, but that's another subject. Pass this around. Everyone should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say. Powerful words that strike home.

God bless America.
This is just an excerpt. The whole email made me blow a gasket.

So I emailed my mom and my RRR with this response:
I don't want to be rude, but your friends are ignorant. There was major coverage of the shoe bomber in the media. All they need to do is go to Google and type in "shoe bomber trial" and they would get more than 100,000 links. Here are just a few...

While there is a tendency for the media to cover the events of the world in the way that a majority of its product buying viewers (females between 18-24) like to see it, they would never try to hide things like this.

The same day of the London bombings reporters were on trial for not giving up confidential sources. Understandably, the media only covered one thing that day.

And another thing, regarding: "It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom. It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea."

It drives me nuts when the people who say stuff like this are the same people who believe women shouldn't have the right to choose what happens to their own body. When they are the same people who say that the terminally ill have no freedom to choose to end their life. When they are the same people who say that being gay is a sin and therefore you are lesser of a person and don't deserve the same freedoms accorded to people just like them.

How can the same people who champion the individual freedoms we are guaranteed as Americans be the same people who are so willing to restrict the freedoms of Americans who are not like them??

And finally, a person cannot claim the media is liberally biased just because they happened not to read the news that day. That is not called liberal bias, it's called being misinformed.
Of course, I forgot to even bring up the fact that on one hand these people bash and threaten judges for being 'activists' while on the other, when they rule in their favor or say things that reinforce their opinions, they love them.

GRRRRRRRRRRR.....

I'm convinced that some political organization has a division that writes those stupid forward e-mails and distributes them through senior centers. I'm dead serious. My grandparents e-mail like no one's business - and last election cycle it was all anti-kerry forwards with all the usual rumors.

Old Age + E-mail + Too Much Time On Your Hands = Trouble

It drives me nuts. Haven't they heard that antecodotal evidence doesn't prove anything? Did they not see the Monica Lewinsky coverage?

The right always does these stupid word surveys to determine whether the media is liberal, and conclude that the media uses liberal-preferred words more often than right-preffered words (it might be my liberal bias, but right-preferred words tend to stink of spin comparatively). But they never look at the "left" stories, the genuine public-interest stories not the Republican v. Democrat stories, that are NEVER covered because of corporate - and therefore right - bias. Global warming? All over Europe's papers, we're seeing island nations go under right next door, and the majority of Americans still don't believe in it because of the skewed and lacking coverage. The Heat is On is a good book that shows how corporate media controlled the debate on this one, http://www.heatisonline.org, but it isn't the only example.
