Junk Email?

A comment in my last post drove me to wonder if too many emailed newsletters can drive a voter away from a candidate. That question sparked a thought in my mind about the theory that repeated messages are better understood and remembered by the public. In the PR industry, we always tell our clients to run an ad in a newspaper at least three times to ensure that the message is received by readers.

The same notion I believe applies to emailed newsletters. Sending out email newsletters on a regular basis will ensure readers are receiving the messages from the campaign. Increased distribution of emailed newsletters can occur at critical points of the campaign, such as the last week or so.

While nobody likes to get junk mail, I think that if you subscribe to an emailed newsletter, then you know you are going to get emails from the campaign.

I was wondering the same thing.
Aren't newsletters kind of annoying? I mean people do get tired of receiving fwd's and advertisement. Don't they get tired of newsletters as well? I think if you are very interested in the campaign it won't bother you, but sometimes you are just to busy to read all the junk that appears in your mail and you just delete it. Does that happen the same with email newsletter. I really do not think they are the best strategy for a political campaign.

Although having your inbox flooded with email newsletters can be annoying, I don't think that it would necessarily drive a voter away from a candidate. The recepient can simply choose to delete the email before reading it. I highly doubt the voter, who himself subscribed to the email list, would be so annoyed that he would change his opinion of the candidate. I think that, in spite of the annoyance that email newsletters might pose to some, they are still a great and effective tool to share updates and information with potential voters.

By definition a newsletter that someone subscribes to is not “Junk Email”. I subscribe to an email newsletter from Campmor. About halve the time I delete it without even looking at it, but it does not bother me at all because I subscribed to it. I agree that if someone subscribed, and they can unsubscribe, sending them a newsletter every week is not a big deal.
