From the Mouths of Babes

After reading Nielsen’s "Usability of Web Sites for Teenagers," I think that what teenagers expect from a Web Site is pretty much what we should all want. Basically, teens want a site that is eye-catching and not boring, one that doesn’t take much time to download, and one that isn’t wordy. Well, I think if we listened to what these teenagers want, we’d create better overall sites. Emi and Phil say in Winning Campaigns Online that the best sites are easy to use, have a download time of 15 seconds or less, have top-quality photos and graphics, and have well-written pages among other things. So maybe these kids, oops I mean teens, do know what they are talking about and can teach us something.

Having a quick, eye-catching web site is crucial. Teenagers are the internet generation and if a web site can appeal to that generation, then that web site has struck gold. But, I would caution that older generations are still not as internet savvy. Depending on a web site's audience it should be designed as plain and simple if its audience is older. If your audience are teenagers, then yes, make the web site flashy, colorful and have interesting graphics.

Like you said, you would think that this is what we all want, and should be common sense. However, a lot of people who are academics rather than practical people see wordy websites with mass amounts of information as great things, which I think, can lead to bad websites.

I totally agree with what you have to say. I think it not only applies to teens, but adults as well. We are an extremely busy society, and concise, informative information, that is readily available, gets our attention and keeps us wanting more from the source.

You are right on...always remember the KISS rule. The internet has taken us to a new age of information that demands speed. Stats tells us that consumers must reach the "buy point" on a web site within 2 clicks if you are going to make a sale. The first 5 listings on a search engine gets 80% of the action and the last one on the first page gets 10%... leaving a big 10% for 6,7,8,9 and the other 150,000. Yes, you had better be short, sweet and to the point or they're gone gone next door to buy.
