What's to debate?
For PMGT 260, the infamous ethics class, we had to read Jacob Weisberg’s article, "A Banner Year." We then discussed tonight in class whether it is ethical for candidates to use information gained from consumers’/citizens’ Internet behavior to target specific people with banner ads and whether or not this was a violation of their privacy. Personally, I didn’t see the debate here. Political organizations and candidates have been using personal information to target people for years. Advertising via direct mail, cable television, magazines, etc. has always been targeted to specific people based on information gained and even purchased about those people.
Furthermore, how can this be a privacy issue? When you log on to the Internet, you expect that what you do and what sites you visit are in the public domain. If you don’t expect this, then you should because anyone with the right technology and skills can gain access to your information, from seeing what sites you may have visited to hacking in and reading your personal emails.
There is no ethical or privacy violation here, simply candidates using technology to advertise to targeted people as they have done with all other media for years.
